This work, Volume 1 of three volumes, gathers papers which have appeared in the National Political Science Review between 1989 and 2012, reflecting the history of the study of African American politics. The book begins with an overview of the participatory dynamics and promise of black electoral politics. Part 1 traces how black politics and black political scientists came of age: some chapter topics include liberalism and black political thought, white and black perceptions of the electability of black political candidates, and pioneering books on black politics, 1903-1965. Part 2 analyzes black mayoral leadership in Atlanta, Birmingham, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Detroit. The last section of the book examine black politics in the 1990s, with chapters on the politics of deracialization in the 1990s, the impact of Jesse Jackson’s presidential bids, and the case of Boston’s Mandela Referendum as an example of the relationship between urban nationalism and economic dependence. Persons (political science, Georgia Institute of Technology) is former editor of the National Political Science Review. There is no subject index.
